Triple Crown voice Tom Durkin is resigning from his post. Now 60 years of age, he is calling it a career after more than 27 years of anchoring for NBC Sports. He explains that stress is the reason why he quit, saying “it’s something I had to do. It’s not something I wanted to do.”
Durkin is taking a maintenance prescription drug called Inderal. It’s a beta blocker which helps the user deal with excess anxiety. He shares that “the Triple Crown is part of my life for three months of the year and I’m always under stress. It doesn’t go away. It stays with you and that’s the dangerous kind of stress.”
He adds that “numbers started going in the wrong direction” as his doctor told him, thus having had to make a forced decision. Meanwhile, it wasn’t until after the last five Belmont Stakes that ABC gave up rights to cover the event over to NBC.
