The much anticipated match between Manny Pacquiao and Ricky Hatton ended in less than six minutes. The Filipino knocked the Briton down in the second round with 10 seconds left on the clock. Hatton fell twice before in the first round with a series of lightning-quick right hooks.
With the knockout win, Pacquiao solidifies his place as the world’s number one pound-for-pound boxer.
“That was two of the most exciting rounds I have seen in my career,” commented Chris Mannix, a writer from Sports Illustrated. “You saw, from the opening bell, Pacquiao was really dominant.”
Pacquiao now adds the light-welterweight crown to his past world titles, including lightweight, super-featherweight, light-featherweight, featherweight and flyweight. His career now stands at 49-3-2 with 37 wins coming from knockouts.
After two knockdowns in the first round, Hatton managed to get on his feet. However, the outcome seemed inevitable as the second round began.
Hatton deployed his patented brawler style attack, but he was outclassed by Pacquiao’s speed and technique. The Filipino’s right hook barrage opened Hatton up for a left hook that put Hatton down for good.
“It turned out he [Hatton] just wasn't very good at boxing,” said Mannix. “You saw the difference between a great fighter and very good fighter.”
