England Beaten Again E-mail

Even the arrival of captain Michael Vaughan failed to lift the English side as their miserable Australian tour continued with an 8- wicket loss over the home side in the first match of the Commonwealth Bank Series.

Needing 243 runs to win, the Aussies blasted an inexperienced English bowling to maintain their perfect record in the summer. Having been put in to bat first, England managed a respectable score of 242-8 in their allotted 50 overs.

Kevin Pietersen top scored for England with a mature knock of 82 runs in 91 balls. Pietersen was ably supported by Paul Collingwood and Andrew Flintoff who chipped in with well made 43 and 47 runs respectively.

Australia continued to menace the England bowling attack with a 100-run opening partnership between Gilchrist and Hayden. England though came back to dismiss both the openers in quick succession, reducing the home side to 113-2.

However Ricky Ponting played a captain's knock and built a solid partnership with Michael Clarke and making sure that Australia reached the target without any discomfort. Ponting scored a well made 82 (95) runs while Clarke made 57 (75).

Hopes of an English revival in the remainder of the tour took a further blow after it was announced that Pietersen will not be featuring in the rest of the tournament with a broken rib and will be returning back to England for treatment.

England captain Michael Vaughan believes that losing Pietersen is a big blow to his side but added that this could be an opportunity for some other players to catch the eyes in their next game against New Zealand. "We're just trying to get some momentum but missing Kevin Pietersen for the series is a huge loss although it does give an opportunity to someone else. We did some good things and we have to build on those for the next game", he added.
