Venus Williams advanced to the semifinal round of the US Open last Tuesday with a win over Francesca Schiavone.

Williams won 7-6 (7-5), 6-4. She will face either Kim Clijsters or Samantha Stosur in the next round.

Schiavone was able to force a tie-breaker in the first set, but Williams claimed the final two points to take the set.
