Three-time San Jose champion Andy Roddick barged his way to the quarterfinals of the ATP tournament in California with a 6-3 7-6 win over Ernests Gulbis.

With the win, Roddick joins a final fray of eight comprised of eight Americans. But it was not easy for Roddick as Gulbis gave him more than his money’s worth in his last match. Now, Roddick will be facing Tommy Hass of Germany for the next round.

James Black, another American, is also through to the next round of the tournament. He defeated France’s Florent Serra 6-4 6-3 to advance to the next round where he will face Denis Gremelmayr.
