Defending champion Amelie Mauresmo was dumped out of the Australian Open by Czech teenager Lucie Safarova in straight sets on a day that saw many top seeds take the bow out of the tournament.

Safarova, 19, won the match with a comfortable margin of 6-4 6-3, with Mauresmo having no answers to Safarova's hard hitting shots. Ranked 70th in the world rankings, Safarova looked to be an easy target for Mauresmo who raced to a 4-1 lead in the opening set.

Safarova bounced back strongly, picking up 12 points in a row leveling the set at 4-4 and going ahead to win the it 6-4. She continued to play brilliantly in the second set and took a 4-1 lead before serving out the match to win the set 6-3.

After the match, Safarova said that she tried to play aggressively and the move worked out well for her. "I was trying to be more aggressive. When I was playing against a big player before, I was still hurrying too much on the court and making so many mistakes. I'm so happy to win. I can't believe I did it", she added.

Meanwhile in other match, Serena Williams continued her strong comeback by defeating 11th seed Jelena Jankovic 6-3 6-2 while third seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova lost out to Israel's Shahar Peer 6-4 6-2.
