Maria Sharapova has advanced to the quarterfinal round of the Bank of the West Classic in Palo Alto, California.

The fifth-seeded Sharapova defeated Olga Govortsova in straight sets to advance to the next round, where she will face Elena Dementieva.

Marion Bartoli, the sixth seed, also moved up to the quarterfinal round after defeating Ivanovic.

Other second round victors include: Victoria Azarenka and Maria Kirilenko.
