Last Sunday, Roger Federer made the record books with an epic win against Andy Roddick 5-7 7-6 (8-6) 7-6 (7-5) 3-6 16-14 to capture his sixth Wimbledon title. The Swiss player now holds the record for most Grand Slam titles with 15.
Federer was tested by the hungry American. Roddick had four set points in the second and did not drop the serve until the final of the match. The last set was the longest ever played in a men’s Wimbledon final. The entire match lasted for about four hours and thirty minutes.
At 27 years old, Federer now has six Wimbledon titles, five US Opens, three Australian Opens and one French Open trophy with a total of 15. He now moves past Pete Sampras in the record books.
He will also be ranked the world’s number one, a position that was taken from him last year by the Spaniard Rafael Nadal.
Tennis legends Pete Sampras, Rod Laver, and Bjorn Borg watched the final. The crowd also had other famous faces, like Woody Allen and Russell Crowe.
At the opening set, Roddick saved four break points during the 11th game, causing problems for Federer. Federer went wide on a crosscourt drive, which put him a set down and he repeated the error to give Roddick the first set 7-5.
Roddick and Federer have met 20 times during their career, but Roddick has only won 18 of them. They met twice in Wimbledon (2004 and 2005). Federer won both those matches.
However, he faced a new Roddick in the 2009 final. Roddick mixed powerful ground strokes with well-timed net attacks to confuse Federer.
The American dominated the serve again in the second set as he extended to a 6/2 lead, taking him to four set points. During the tie break, Federer valiantly fought back to turn the tide and it was now Roddick who was under siege.
Roddick saved a break point in the sixth game of the third set before entering another tie break.
Federer had three set points, two of which were saved by Roddick, but “R-Fed” opened up a two set to one lead when a Roddick serve fell comfortably to his hitting zone, allowing him to hit a forehand winner.
Roddick fought back to lead 3-1 in the fourth set to lead to force the decisive set.
With the win, Federer is now arguably the best tennis player of all-time.
