Elena Dementieva earned an easy win last Monday in the first round of the Pilot Pen Tennis event held in New Haven, Conn.

Dementieva defeated Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.

She advances to the second round along with top-seeded Dinara Safina.

Others that advanced in the second round included defending champion Caroline Wozniacki, Dominika Cibulkova, Nadia Petrova, and Bethanie Mattek-Sands.
