Valencia defender David Navarro has been handed out a seven month European ban for his role in the fracas caused after the Champions League match between Valencia and Inter.
UEFA's disciplinary body has also asked both the clubs to pay a fine of £106,000. Other players to receive bans were Valencia's Carlos Marchena for four games, Inter's Ivan Cordoba for three and Julio Cruz for two.
UEFA revealed that it would now be asking FIFA to examine the evidence and extend the ban to an international level so that Navarro will be banned from all competitions including domestic leagues and national-team fixtures. UEFA added that it reached the decision after a careful examination of official reports of the delegate and referee, along with video evidence.
Valencia has said that it will be appealing against the decision. "We have three days to evaluate Uefa's ruling but I can tell you that we will appeal", said club president Juan Soler.
Trouble started at the end of the match when Valencia midfielder Marchena tried to kick at Inter's Nicolas Burdisso after exchanging some heated words. Tussle started immediately between all the players and Navarro, a substitute who had not featured in the game, ran across the pitch and threw a punch on Burdisso and breaking his nose.
Navarro was chased off the pitch by a number of Inter players who tried to tackle him. However the Spanish defender escaped and locked himself in the dressing room. Navarro later apologized for his actions adding that he will be apologizing to Burdisso in person.
"I want to say sorry for what happened, what I did was not good. It was a lack of respect for the football world and that's why I wanted to ask forgiveness from the Inter player. If I need to go to Italy to say sorry, I will. This is a bad time for me, nothing like this has happened before because I am not a violent person. I am setting a bad example", he said.
