Real Madrid President Says Beckham Is A Hollywood Hopeful E-mail
Written by Staff Writer

In a scathing attack Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon has called superstar David Beckham a "Hollywood hopeful" and has said that the hype surrounding his move to LA Galaxy messed Real Madrid.

Calderon said that no European club wanted Becks and hence he was forced  to accept a US offer. "The proof that our technical staff was correct not to retain him has been borne out by every other technical staff in the world not wanting him even though he was out of contract," he added in an interview with Spanish radio station Cadena COPE.

Calderon also ranted a Madrid's superstars saying that they were besieged by "egotism and vanity." Calderon also said midfielder Jose Maria Gutierrez had not played up to his potential. He also took a swipe at former club president Florentino Perez saying that it was he who had obstructed a bid for AC Milan's Kaka.

His comments have outraged several people with sections of the Spanish media calling for him to resign.  "This demonstrates that Ramon Calderon is completely unsuited to preside over a club like Real Madrid," Jesus Alcaide of daily El Mundo said.

Faced with this barrage of criticism, Calderon issued a statement saying, “I want to apologize a thousand times to anyone that might have been offended. But I want people to know that everything I’ve done since I got here has been for the good of the club.”
