Pardew Sacked, Curbishley Favorite For West Ham Job E-mail

Just days after praising Alan Pardew for his achievements at West Ham United, chairman Eggert Magnusson has decided to sack him following poor performances in the league which sees the Hammers languishing in the relegation zone.

Pardew, whose highlight at Upton Park was the 9th place finish last year, had his contract terminated after the humiliating 4-0 defeat at Bolton on Saturday. West Ham has managed to score just one goal in the last six matches and have collected a single point from nine away games. Media and managers alike were surprised by the sacking, which came just a couple of weeks after the new owner had said that Pardew had the full backing of the board.

An official statement to the media, posted on its website, said, "West Ham United announce the departure from the club of Alan Pardew. Alan has made an important contribution since joining as manager in September 2003, but this season's results have been disappointing and have left the club in a very difficult position."

"The chairman, Mr Eggert Magnusson, and the board have been concerned by the performances of recent weeks and feel that it is the right time to make a change in the best interests of the club. Mr Magnusson and the board would like to place on the record their thanks to Alan Pardew for his hard work and commitment and to wish him well for the future."

"The search for a successor is now underway in order that a new manager can be in place ahead of the January transfer window." The statement added that for the time being, the reigns of the club would be handed over to the first team coach, Kevin Keen until a suitable successor is found. Former Charlton manager Alan Curbishley is seen as the favorite with Sven-Goran Eriksson a close second.

The 45-year old joined West Ham in 2003 from Reading and guided the club to a 4th place finish in his first season. However they failed to get the promotion after losing in the play-off final to Crystal Palace.

Hammers gained the promotion next season after beating Preston North End in the play-off final, after finishing the season in 6th position. Pardew's first season in the Premiership with Hammers was a fairytale, guiding the team to 9th position and to the FA Cup final, where he lost to Liverpool.

West Ham’s recent form is horrific to say the least with only 10 points collected from a possible 45 and scoring just two goals away from home.
