Drogba Double Takes Chelsea To Carling Cup Glory E-mail

Didier Drogba once again came to Chelsea's rescue, scoring both the goals in Chelsea's 2-1 win over Arsenal in Millennium Stadium in a match that saw England captain John Terry being stretchered off after a frightening tackle by Diaby.

The game proved to be cruel for the young Arsenal side that had dominated the game enough to get something out of it. The Gunners took the lead courtesy a brilliant play by 17-year old Theo Walcott who waltzed past Ricardo Carvalho to score his first goal for Arsenal in 11th minute.

However Chelsea recovered quickly and equalized through Drogba albeit in a controversial manner. Ballack's chipped through ball was latched on by Drogba who then made no mistake in beating Almunia. Wenger was furious with the linesman for not flagging Drogba for offside and spent the remainder of the half remonstrating against the referee.

Arsenal stepped up a gear and continued to trouble Chelsea and came very near to taking the lead just before half time through Jeremie Aliadiere, only for Carvalho to intervene. The Gunners started the second half brightly and came near scoring when Diaby had a shot on goal but was denied by Cech.

John Terry had to be stretchered off midway through the second half after he caught a boot on the face when Diaby tried to score from the corner. Terry's injury seemed to lift his teammates though and Chelsea took the lead in the 84th minute when Drogba headed home a Robben cross.

The match ended on a sour note when referee Howard Webb showed red card to Toure, Adebayor and Obi Mikel in the final minute of injury time when Toure and Mikel clashed and Adebayor intervened.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho believed that his team deserved the victory. "In the second half we dominated the game and at the end of the day we deserved the victory. They played very good. They have a great coach, great players. But football is about winning and the cup goes to us", he added.
