Chelsea won their first Premier League match in 4 games to stay in touch with league leaders Manchester United, defeating relegation threatened Wigan Athletic 4-0.
Dutch international Arjen Robben produced a scintillating display, as Chelsea made sure that there would be no more slip-ups as they attempt to stage a serious bid to win their third successive Premier League title. Jose Mourinho returned to his favored 4-3-3 formation and Wigan had no answer to any tactical moves made by him.
Lampard opened the scoring in the 13th minute with a tame free kick, which sneaked past through Wigan defenders into the far corner of the net. Pretty soon Chelsea were back in business, with Robben showing his class by consistently frustrating the Wigan defense with a number of mazy runs.
Chelsea's second goal came from a horror back pass by Haestad, which found Robben, and the Dutch international gleefully passed the ball back into the net. However Wigan's agony did not end, as Robben's cross hit a diving Kirkland's elbow and rolled into the goal. Wigan's humiliation was complete when Drogba completed the proceedings by pouncing on John Obi Mikel's cross to score his 13th goal of the campaign.
Speaking after the match, Jose Mourinho said that his team's past performances was largely due to the absence of top players. "We have missed our special players recently. You saw the way Robben played today, imagine if we had been able to call upon him over Christmas, a lot of the results might have been different."
"It was a very good result for us. We pushed the defense up, scored a few goals, played with a good spirit and dominated the game. After a run of three league games without a win it is nice to get one. It has been a dark period in that we haven't won, but a light one because we haven't lost despite all our problems", he said.
Meanwhile Michael Carrick scored his first goal for Manchester United as Aston Villa continued their poor run of 10 games without a win with a 3-1 loss at Old Trafford. The complete list of results is as given below:
