FA Cup holders Liverpool were thrashed by a resurgent Arsenal 3-0 at Anfield, dumping the Reds out of the tournament in the third round.

Two brilliant goals from Tomas Rosicky in the first half settled the game for the Gunners, ending a 20 match unbeaten run for Liverpool at Anfield. Arsenal started the game in first gear, allowing Liverpool the loin's share of the possession, all the time waiting for an opportunity to counter attack.

And the Gunners were rewarded in the 37th minute following a great counter-attacking move to take the lead. Getting possession in their own half, Rosicky and Alexander Hleb played a patient passing game on the right side of the field. Hleb then made a low cross at the edge of the penalty area for Rosicky to curl the ball into the net.

Rosicky had his second when he thumped the ball past Dudek just before the half time. The Reds started the second half with a high tempo and pulled one back when Dirk Kuyt flicked in a goal from a corner in the 71st minute. However any hopes of an equalizer was dashed when Henry snatched the ball from Carragher at the touchline and side footed the ball into the net.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger said that his players deserved the win for the character and discipline shown. "I felt we have shown character and good discipline. We were organized under pressure. We had two or three good chances on the break and scored one then it was all over. They have an unbelievable crowd and the team gave everything. It takes a good team to beat them and we were that team", he added.

Meanwhile in other matches, Chelsea thumped league-two side Macclesfield 6-1 while Charlton's woes continued with a 2-0 loss against Nottingham Forest
