Following the footsteps of David Beckham, former USA captain and Manchester City player Claudio Reyna has confirmed that he will be joining Major League Soccer team New York Red Bulls just a day Manchester City terminated his contract.
The 33-year old midfielder joined Manchester City at the start of the season and rumors persisted about a possible move back to his home country. Manchester City agreed to release the player on Tuesday after he made clear his desire to return to United States, citing family reasons.
Reyna, who captained the US national team during the 2002 and 2006 World Cups, will find a familiar face at the Red Bulls in form of sporting director and head coach Bruce Arena, who has already coached him during Reyna's stint at University of Virginia and for the US national team. Arena was clearly delighted with Reyna's decision to join him at the club.
"I am pleased that Claudio has agreed to sign with our club. Claudio is a proven player at the highest levels in the game and his experience and leadership skills will improve our team. I'm excited to have him as a member of the Red Bulls", Arena said.
Reyna's professional career in Europe included stints with Bayer Leverkusen, Wolfsburg, Rangers, Sunderland and Manchester City. Reyna made his feeling clear after confirming the move saying that he was thrilled to return to his country.
"I'm very excited to be coming back to play at home minutes from where I grew up. I look forward to playing for Bruce, who I have known for such a long time, and am excited about the whole opportunity to join a club that is looking to do a lot of good things in the future", he added.
