David Steckel scored 6 minutes into the overtime period to give the Washington Capitals a 5-4 edge over Pittsburgh, sending their Eastern semifinal to a decisive seventh game.
Brooks Laich took a shot toward the Pittsburgh goal that clipped Steckel’s stick and passed the Penguins goal keeper, Marc-Andre Fleury.
Victor Kozlov contributed two points for the Capitals, who will play game seven against the Penguins on Wednesday in Washington.
Alexander Semin added a goal and an assist, while Tomas Fleischmann scored a point for Washington. Alex Ovechkin handed three assists and Simeon Varlamov had a solid 38 saves.
On the other side, Sidney Crosby scored one foal and distributed one assist. Bill Guerin, Mark Eaton, and Kriss Letang scored for the Penguins, who have not been in a game seven since 2001 against the Buffalo Sabres. Evgeni Malkin also had a notable performance with three assists.
Fleury was dealt with his first career overtime playoff defeat. He allowed five goals on 24 attempts.
