Ian Laperriere to sit out playoffs due to mild concussion E-mail

Philadelphia Flyers forward Ian Laperriere will miss the rest of the NHL playoffs after being hit by a puck in the head, the team announced last Tuesday.

Laperriere suffered a minor concussion and brain contusion after being struck above his right eye during the team’s playoff match last Thursday. The Flyers clinched the Eastern Conference quarterfinal series against New Jersey.

Philadelphia General Manager Paul Holmgren said that Laperriere was examined last Tuesday by a neurosurgeon.

“I think this is significant,” said Holmgren. “They saw a spot right there (on his brain) initially, and I think they were hoping, like we all were, that it would dissipate a little bit.”

Holmgren further explained that it is not safe to play Laperriere right now. The manager said that this is a big loss for the team, because Laperriere is good on the penalty kill and he also gives the team heart.
