The NHL fined Edmonton Oilers Coach Pat Quinn $10,000 last Friday for comments saying inappropriate post-game comments during their game against Calgary.
Quinn became angry after the Flames’ Jarome Iginla tripped Oiler Sheldon Souray.
“I don't understand the players of today,” explained Quinn during the press conference. “If that had happened in the old days he would have got hit over the head with a stick right after. It was a pretty dirty play in my opinion. He poked his feet out and then piled on top of him. Somehow they never deal with that ... and they won't let the vigilante stuff happen to deal with it. It's disappointing.”
Souray was taken off the ice and did not return to finish the game, which was won by Calgary in a 4-3 shootout.
Iginla was charged with a minor penalty for tripping Souray.
“Mr. Quinn's comments were inappropriate and without justification,” explained Colin Campbell, the league’s senior executive VP of hockey operations.
In response to the comments, Iginla denied that he tried to injure Souray. Iginla explained: “It was freaky play and I definitely didn't mean to do that. He's an honest player and I didn't mean to hit him from behind.”
