The Indianapolis Colts will be releasing Marvin Harrison this afternoon, ending a 13-year career with the franchise.
Team owner Jim Irsay made the official announcement in the team’s complex. He was joined by team president Bill Polian and head coach Jim Caldwell.
The record-setting wide receiver did not attend the press conference. Irsay sung him praises, saying he “changed the face of the franchise ... he really brought us into a period of greatness.”
At 36 years old, Harrison is ranked second in NFL history with 1,102 receptions. Not only that, he is also ranked fourth in yards (14,580) and fifth in touchdowns (128). He was a first round draft choice of Indianapolis in 1996.
Unfortunately, the franchise could no longer shoulder his salary, $13.4 million.
“We had a great conversation, had a chance to reflect on a lot that has happened in these 12-plus years. (I) will be looking forward to the day he goes into the Hall of Fame,” said Irsay.
Harrison was an eight-time Pro-Bowl selection. But, he’s previous two season has been his least productive ones. He missed 11 games in 2007 with a knee injury and he finished with a lackluster 20 receptions. This season, he played 15 games and recorded 60 receptions, 636 yards, and five touchdowns—all far below his typical stats.
