Landon Donovan scored during injury time to lead the United States (US) over Algeria, 1-0. The Americans now advanced to the next round of the 2010 World Cup.

The US ranked top in their group for the first time since 1930. The team recorded five goals, which tied them with England. However, the English team had a lower goal difference, allowing the US to catch the top spot.

Donovan slotted in the rebound after Rais Bolhi, Algeria’s goalkeeper, stopped Clint Dempsey’s kick from close range during the first minute of injury time.

“I'm shocked,” explained Donovan. “I'm so proud of our guys. Unbelievable, Clint made a good run in the middle, the ball fell to me… time kind of stopped. You can't miss from there.”

Both teams failed to score during regulation. A 0-0 draw would have eliminated both teams, because England completed a win over Slovenia.

As the final whistle was blown, the US bench rushed to the field and piled on top of the players on the sideline.

“We believe man. We're alive!” Donovan exclaimed in an interview after the match.
