Edwards suspended by NASCAR E-mail
Written by Sports Know It Alls Staff

Carl Edwards was placed on NASCAR’s probation list last Tuesday for intentionally wrecking the car of Brad Keselowski.

NASCAR said that Edwards was not suspended or docked standings’ points for the disciplinary action.

“We made it very clear to [Edwards] that these actions were not acceptable and did go beyond what we said back in January about putting the driving back in the hands of the drivers,” said NASCAR president Mike Helton. “I believe [Edwards] understands our position at this point.”

Edwards hit the rear of Keselowski while racing down the front stretch of the Atlanta Motor Speedway. The hit caused Keselowski’s car to go airborne, and land upside down. Fortunately, no one was injured during the incident.

Rain delays Danica Patrick’s NASCAR debut E-mail

Last Friday, rain disrupted the action at the Daytona International Speedway in Florida, delaying Danica Patrick’s competitive NASCAR debut.

Patrick was supposed to have participated in the qualifying round last Friday for Saturday’s Nationwide race. Instead, she has been assigned the number 15 starting position in her first NASCAR appearance.

Because the qualifying round was cancelled, the starting grid was determined based on owner points from the 2009 season.

Patrick finished sixth in the ARCA race at Daytona last weekend and she decided to make her Nationwide debut this week.

“I think that I'm just gonna have to stay calm and cool,” said Patrick. “If the car is difficult to drive, I think the discipline will be to just keep it at the pace that I'm comfortable with, keep it in the race, try and work on it on the pit stops and tune it in as much as possible.”

Dixon takes the lead in the Indy Car race E-mail

Scott Dixon caught the checkered flag last Saturday to take the Indy Japan 300, giving him a two-place-ranking jump in the championship event with one event remaining.

Dixon, who is now in first place, outran teammate Dario Franchitti by 1.4 seconds to catch his fifth IndyCar race of the year. The two were followed by Graham Rahal, Oriol Servia, Mario Moraes, and Danica Patrick.

Dixon earned 53 points, which is the maximum number available for any IndyCar race. He won 50 points for finishing first, one point for taking the pole, and the remaining two points were for taking the most laps in the race.

For this year, Dixon has already scored 570 points, which is five more than Franchitti. Ryan Briscoe, who started the day with the most points, hit the wall midway through the race and the vehicle needed extensive repairs.

Briscoe eventually finished at number 18, bringing him to third place in the total points rankings for the event.

The IndyCar championship will be decided on October 10 at Miami.

Brian Vickers ran his second consecutive pole with a strong finish last Friday ay Infineon Raceway.

Vickers recorded a 93.678 mph lap in a Toyota to win his fourth pole of the season. He also won the pole last weekend at Michigan, where he finished ninth.

Vickers barely edged out defending race winner Kyle Busch, who ran a lap at 93.415 mph to qualify for second. Busch was followed by Marcos Ambrose to give Toyota the top three pole positions.

Scott Speed was one of four players who failed to qualify for the grid. He ran off course in Turn 10, spoiling what would have been a great run for the Formula One driver.

Last Thursday night, Ryan Newman finished a lap at 188.475 to grab top pole position for the Coca-Cola 600.

It was Newman’s eighth career pole at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, the most of any active driver. The run also marked his 44th overall career pole.

A close second to Newman is Kyle Busch with 188. 258. Points leader Jeff Gordon qualified for third pole position, followed by Hendrick Motorsports teammates Mark Martin and Jimmie Johnson. They will all compete in NASCAR’s longest race this Sunday.

Bill Elliot needed to qualify on speed. He earned the 10th pole position, marking his 800th career start. J.J. Yeley, who filled in for the suspended Jerry Mayfield, failed to qualify for the race.
