Barry Bonds, the legendary home run leader, will be retiring, as confirmed by Jeff Borris, his agent.
The 45-year-old last played for the majors in 2007. His career was showered in controversy when he had obstruction of justice charges pressed on him during the BALCO probe. He was allegedly using steroids as a performance enhancer.
The seven-time National League MVP announced he had no intentions of retiring in hopes of attracting a franchise.
Bonds hit 172 home runs in 23 seasons.
“It's two years since he played his last game, and if there was any chance he'd be back in a major league uniform, it would have happened by now,” said Borris. “Now, its 2010 (and) ... I'd say it's nearly impossible. It's an unfortunate ending to a storied career.”
