Tiger Woods will return Down Under for the first time since 1998 when he plays in the Australian Masters tourney, as confirmed by organizers last Thursday.
The biggest attraction in the golfing world will be teeing off at the famous Kingston Heath course in Melbourne on November 12. The Herald Sun newspaper said that the athlete will be receiving an appearance fee of 3 million Australian dollars.
“We are delighted Tiger Woods has chosen to come to Melbourne, further cementing our position as the major events capital of the world,” said John Brumby, a Victorian State Premier, in an emailed statement.
Legendary Australian golfer Peter Thompson expressed his concern about Woods’ impact on the tour. “In my view it's going to do a lot of damage to our national Open, which comes two weeks after this one in Melbourne,” Thomson told Reuters.com. “The Australian Open is our national championship, it is the most important event that we have. He won't be playing in that but that sucks up all the potential sponsorship.”
Woods recently recovered from a nine-month injury following knee surgery. In his last tournament (WCC-CA Championship in Florida) he finished ninth.
