The new president of the NCAA, Mark Emmert, is confident that with him on the watch, the most time-honored tenet of college athletics will be followed. He says that "it's grossly unacceptable and inappropriate to pay players... converting them from students to employees."
However, with the Final Four coming together and putting an end to a three-week appearance that makes almost $771 million annually from television networks alone, Emmert admits that now's the time to discuss whether or not to let players have a piece of the monetary pie.
Emmert remarks that "the sooner, the better," adding that he “will make clear that I want this to be a subject we explore." He doesn't want players to be paid huge sums of money, instead looking at the possibility of enlarging their scholarships by several grand in order to cover their laundry, travel and other common expenses in college. He isn't promising anything either, except that he will be bringing up the matter in April at the NCAA's next set of board meetings.
